Nondestructive testing of forehearth cover blocks
Introduction
The most important properties for the forehearth superstructures are the resistance to creep and to vapor chemical attack.
Additionally to ensure the full campaign life without any problems forehearths cover blocks must be free from internal cracks and irregular areas, which can weaken the blocks.
In the field of special shapes manufacturing, products can be monolithic blocks weighing more than one ton. If a control of the material characteristics such as chemical analysis can be done on small samples because of the identical composition, the mechanical properties of the block could vary with the scale of production.
To have results more reliable, these tests should be made on the whole block; however, this process is slow and inefficient. The turning point is represented by control methods classified as “non-destructive”, specifically ultrasonic method.
